How to choose the right tarot spread online
Start with the intent, not with the number of cards.
A three-card draw and a ten-card cross are not the quick and the thorough version of one thing. Each position asks the cards a different question, so the layout decides what kind of answer you can get at all. A daily check-in wants one card and one honest reaction; a decision you have circled for months wants a structure that separates what you feel from what is actually happening.
If the situation is broad and you cannot see its shape yet, start with Past — Present — Future or the Cross spread. If the question already has a name — a person, a job, a sum of money — go straight to the thematic layout built for it. A narrow question in a broad spread comes back vague, and that is usually read as the cards being unclear when the layout was the real problem.
Career and money readings in one catalog
The career group is deliberately split into six pages rather than one broad work reading, because “should I quit” and “where is my money going” are not the same question. Name the question
Write it down before you turn any card over. “What is blocking me at work?” gives a sharper reading than “how is work going?”: the cards answer the question you actually asked, not the one you meant.

Draw once, do not redraw
Turn the cards over one at a time and keep your first reaction, including the physical one. If the urge to draw again shows up, make a note of it: it usually arrives together with the answer you were hoping not to get.

Ask for the reading
Once every card is up, request the interpretation. The AI reads the positions against each other rather than one at a time, and turns the result into steps that fit your situation.
The open tarot dataset is our own work
The card meanings on StarTarot rest on primary sources: A. E. Waite’s “The Pictorial Key to the Tarot” (1911) and the tables of correspondences of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. We brought them into a single structure — every card keeps its upright and its reversed wording, and next to it sits a precise pointer to the section of the source that wording came from.
We published that body of data the way research is published: it carries a version number, a DOI and file checksums, it is openly available, and it can be cited, downloaded and reused in your own projects. The readings on this site are built from it on the server — the model connects the meanings to one another, it does not invent them.
Which tarot spread should I choose first?
Choose the spread that matches your question, not the one with the most cards. For a broad situation start with “Past — Present — Future” or the Cross; for work, money, love, or purpose go to the thematic page built for that intent — the table above maps the common ones.
Do career and money tarot spreads duplicate each other?
No. “Career and Work Reading” reads the job you already have, “New job” covers a search or an offer, “Should I change jobs?” answers stay-or-go, “Money flow and finances” is about the money rather than the work, “Own business and project” is for something of your own, and “Life Purpose and Fulfillment” is about what it is all for. Six questions, six layouts.
Can I use the same question in several spreads?
Better to narrow it for each layout. Asking one broad question everywhere makes the answers blur together, and the second reading starts arguing with the first instead of adding to it. If you want a second angle, change what you are asking, not just where you ask it.
How many cards should a tarot spread have?
As many as the question has parts. One card answers what to keep in mind today. Three separate a story into before, now, and where it is heading. Ten are worth it when the situation has people, motives, and a timeline tangled together — and a waste when it does not.
Do reversed cards change the meaning?
They shift it rather than invert it — the same theme, blocked, delayed, or turned inward. Every card here carries both readings, and each spread states whether reversals are used before you draw, so you are never guessing which rules applied.
