A crisis of resources. The Five of Pentacles speaks of need, cold, and rejection. Yet help is nearby if you lift your head to see it.
Introduction
The Five of Pentacles marks the breakdown of the Four. The fortress walls fall or become a prison. Its meaning is financial loss, illness, or a feeling of abandonment. This is the dark night of the soul in the material world.
Meaning
Upright Meaning
Seek support — this difficult period is temporary, help is nearby.
Classical interpretation
The card foretells material trouble above all, whether in the form illustrated—that is, destitution—or otherwise. For some cartomancists, it is a card of love and lovers—wife, husband, friend, mistress; also concordance, affinities. These alternatives cannot be harmonized.

Feeling unwanted. Love in a shack with a leaking roof. Shared money troubles that test the bond.

No money, debts, strict austerity. Loss of income.

A crisis of faith. A feeling of abandonment. Suffering that burns away pride.
Reversed Meaning
The worst is behind you and help is within reach — step through the warm doorway you once walked past, accept support, and rebuild your footing.

Reversed, the Five of Pentacles is the light at the end of the tunnel. The worst is behind you. You find work, recover, or finally step into the warm doorway you once passed by.
Positive
Receiving help. Debts returned. Reconciliation with those you value.
Negative
Sometimes it signals prolonged poverty or chronic illness, especially when nothing in the situation changes.
Symbolism
The classic scene
Two poor figures trudge through a snowstorm past a brightly lit church window. One is on crutches, the other barefoot. The stained glass shows five pentacles. They pass the shelter without noticing.
Snow is the cold of the outer world and frozen feelings. Injuries point to health or self-worth wounded. The church is help that exists but is ignored.

Astrology
In the Golden Dawn system this card is Mercury in Taurus — the first decan of Taurus (0°–10°). Mercury, the planet of trade and thought, slows down in fixed earth: the mind circles around money and security and can get stuck on what is missing. The Golden Dawn calls it the Lord of Material Trouble.
Kabbalah
Geburah (Severity) in the world of Assiah. Painful cutting away of the old to renew.
Alchemy
Putrefactio. Matter decays so new life can begin, like a seed in soil.
Meditation
Imagine walking through a snowstorm. You are cold. Then you see a warm light. You approach the door and knock. It opens and you are let in. Feel the cold leave your body. Allow yourself to accept help.
Ask yourself:
- Whose help do I refuse out of pride?
- Where do I feel poor or lacking?
- Where is my shelter?
Conclusion
The Five of Pentacles teaches humility and mutual aid. Poverty is nothing to be ashamed of; it is a lesson. Do not fear asking, and you will be given. Do not fear giving, and your hand will not run dry.
