Power, security, and control
“Mine.” The Four of Pentacles is about possession and control. It offers stability, but often at the cost of stagnation. Do not turn your fortress into a prison.
Introduction
The Four of Pentacles is preservation of energy and resources. Its meaning is double-edged: reliability and financial success on one side, stinginess, stagnation, and fear of risk on the other. This is the moment you say enough and build a fence around what you have.
Meaning
Upright Meaning
Protect resources, but do not completely close the flow — excessive greed slows down development.
Classical interpretation
The surety of possessions, cleaving to that which one has, gift, legacy, inheritance.

Jealousy and possessiveness. You belong to me. A partner as property or a guarantee of stability. A marriage of convenience or a very conservative union.

Holding your position. Reluctance to share power or information. A steady paycheck in a bureaucratic structure.
Money and finances
Capital grows. Savings and deposits. Buying real estate. Fear of spending.
Spiritual path
Closed to new experience. Attachment to dogma. Spiritual constipation: hoarding knowledge without use.
Reversed Meaning
The dam breaks: spending runs loose after long restraint, or you finally open your hands and start living — keep the openness, not the splurge.

Reversed, the Four of Pentacles is a dam breaking. Money flows out, control is lost. Or a positive release: you stop being a miser and start living.

Symbolism
The classic scene
A man sits on a stone cube holding four pentacles: one balanced on top of his crown, one pressed to his chest, and two held under his feet. A city lies behind him.
His posture is closed, he lets no one into his space. He controls thoughts, feelings, and actions. He is rich, but alone outside the city walls.

Four pentacles form a square, the most stable shape. In the center a crest or flower often appears. It is order, completion, and grounded form.

Astrology
In the Golden Dawn system this card is the Sun in Capricorn — the third decan of Capricorn (20°–30°). The Sun shines in Saturn’s sign of structure and control: the self finds security in what it has built and owns, and holds on tight. The Golden Dawn calls it the Lord of Earthly Power — power that is secure but reaches no further.

Chesed (Mercy) in the world of Assiah. Expansion trapped in dense form, crystallization.
Alchemy
Coagulatio. Fixing the volatile spirit into a solid form.
Meditation
Sit comfortably and feel the support beneath your feet. Imagine fortress walls rising around you. They protect you. Inside are treasures. You are safe. Stay in that feeling.
Now ask: is it too tight here? Can I still see the sun beyond these walls?

Conclusion
The Four of Pentacles is a warning. Stability is good, but life is a current. Do not become a stagnant pond. Own things, but do not let things own you.
