It is not just a failure but a betrayal or a total collapse of plans. Yet in this collapse is a gift: there is nowhere lower to fall. The only way now is up.

Upright Meaning
The cycle of pain is completed — you have survived and can build something new.
Classical interpretation
Whatsoever is intimated by the design; also pain, affliction, tears, sadness, desolation. It is not especially a card of violent death.

The classic scene
A figure lies on the ground pierced by ten swords. The pose is total defeat. The sky is black and heavy, but a golden line of dawn rises on the horizon. The water is calm; the emotional storm has passed, leaving the quiet of death or transformation.
The red cloak can signal life force leaving the body or passions that led to this end.

In the Golden Dawn system this card is the Sun in Gemini — the third decan of Gemini (20°–30°). The clear light of the Sun falls on the restless sign of thought and shows what no longer works: a plan or an illusion is plainly over. The Golden Dawn calls it the Lord of Ruin, yet the same light lets a new day begin.
